Regency Style
By the beginning of the 19th century, England was at war with France and punitive taxes were introduced to raise money. The Glass Excise Act meant that a heavy tax was made on all glass made each day at the glass houses. To avoid the tax, chandelier manufacturers purchased crystal drops cut by garret workers made from broken up pieces of glass. These drops were strung together and fitted to decorative metal frames. The style became popular throughout Europe.
